Transition Town Kingston (TTK) is a grass roots initiative set up to help Kingston respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of Peak Oil and Climate Change. We intend to facilitate local and practical solutions to problems thereby helping Kingston to rebuild the resilience we’ve lost as a result of cheap oil and reduce the community’s carbon emissions drastically.

TTK first met a year ago today and formally registerd in August. They are part of the Transition Network which covers the UK and beyond. There are already over 180 transition iniatives in the UK and the movement is spreading fast. Richmond, Epsom and Twickenham are all close to joining.

For the past year we have been:
 – concentrating on awareness raising around peak oil, climate change and the need to undertake a community lead process to rebuild resilience and reduce carbon use and emissions;
 – connecting with existing groups in the community e.g. Kingston Environment Centre,  Kingston Permaculture, Knollmead permaculture site, Eco-Footprint Group, Kingston-uopn-Thames Local Exchange Tradin System (KUTLETS) and many more;
 – building bridges to local government including encouraging the Council to sign up to the Sustainable Communities Act; giving input to the local energy strategy; contributing events to the Council’s ‘Think in Kingston’ and ‘Paint the Town Green’ festivals and much more
 – connecting with other transition initiatives

We are now at the stage where we are starting to form groups to facilitate local food production and will then move on to all the other key areas of life (energy, transport, health, heart & soul, economics & livelihoods, etc)
